14 x 5.5 Polished Brass with Gold Hardware - 'The Golden Rod' (Twin Cam)

  • Overview

A little bit a curve-ball this one. It's got the individual low-mass oval lugs and the Gold "Flourish" Badge of the 1997+ original Black Panther series, but with a twin-cam throw-off which doesn't match the Orion throw-off on the Brass Master of that series.

The main, very comprehensive, set of photos are of Carmine Appice's personal snare which Donn Bennett of Donn's Drum Vault in Bellevue, MA, USA had up for sale in 2023! As Donn himself says...

All Brass Mapex 5.5×14″ Brass Master Snare drum with brass lugs and 2.3mm Power Hoops. This drum remains in excellent condition. Only a few scuffs on some of the lugs. This is one of the snares Carmine Appice used to recording his Guitar Zeus series of albums. Check out his drum set doodle on the bottom head!

Carmine autographed the batter head in black Sharpie after these photos were taken. Includes a COA signed by Carmine Appice.

Not often you get to see the personal snare of an early Mapex endorsee, and one that clearly impressed him enough to use it as the basis for his signature snare!

Just like its deeper sibling, I have dubbed it the "Golden Rod" because

    • That's an actual HTML colour (#DAA520) and I'm a web geek. Duh!
    • Tom Doogan from the FB Page suggested that it's deeper sibling looked like C-3PO...and it 100% does!
    • It's as arousing as the "Golden Rod Card"  Look it up. Just maybe not at work....

    Update April 2023

Details of the standard version of this (with the Orion strainer) eventually came to light in April 2023 when Julio from NekoMusic in Japan managed to get his hands on the 1999 Japan catalogue that featured the whole family.

It turns out that the range is actually called "Standard Brass", and (roughly) translating the text from the catalogue...

The Standard Brass is a different concept to the Black Panther. 2.3mm Powerhoops and 24K Gold hardware are fitted as standard. Brightness and tightness that are a bit different from the (normal) Black Panther are the major features of this snare.

So basically the same as the Black Brass model but with Powerhoops instead of Die-Cast hoops and a different shell finish, all of which gives a slightly different tone.

Still no idea why this has the Twin Cam strainer, but I'm assuming it's an earlier version.
